We want that education by which character is formed, strength of mind is increased, the intellect is expanded, and by which one can stand on one's own feet.

The Special Features of the Mahamandal

The main work of the Mahamandal is on the minds of the young people : to help them form a life view, find an aim of life, and to provide a practical method of self-development and character-building, so that they may become conscientious citizens, competent to do their duty to society and achieve greater fulfillment of their individual lives. All work of the Mahamandal is directed to this purpose.

  • The Mahamandal goes to the youth where they are.
  • Works on their minds.
  • Talks to them in a way they can understand.
  • The structured training programme of the Mahamandal takes care of harmonious development of body, mind, and heart.
  • The youths are urged to realize the infinite potentials of human life and the scheme of national reconstruction put forward by Swami Vivekananda.
  • Its members are neither to leave their home nor studies, nor normal avocations, but to offer only their surplus energy, time, and if possible, money for the work.
  • The appeal and approach of the Mahamandal is universal. It makes no discrimination on the grounds of religion, caste, or creed and stands for harmony of religions and national integration.

What we want is to see the man who is harmoniously developed – great in heart, great in mind, great in deed. We want the man whose heart feels intensely the miseries and sorrows of the world. And we want the man who not only can feel, but can find the meaning of things, who delves deeply into the heart of nature and understanding. We want the man who will not even stop there, but who wants to work out the feeling and the meaning by actual deeds. Such a combination of head, heart, and hand is what we want.
